Miyako/Kamaishi Dinner Map

The Sanriku Coast area, home to the cities of Miyako and Kamaishi, is a rural region in the already sparsely populated Tohoku area of Japan. These small coastal cities, nestled along Iwate Prefecture’s coast, are known for their serene atmosphere and rich culinary traditions. Miyako’s city center is located to the north of Miyako Station, while in Kamaishi, the central area is situated southwest of the city hall. Given the rural nature of these towns, it is highly recommended to dine at your accommodation, particularly in traditional ryokan, where you can experience local dishes. However, both Miyako and Kamaishi have restaurants that stay open late, so you won’t have difficulty finding a place to eat if you prefer dining out. Among the must-try local foods are the fresh oysters (牡蠣) from Sanriku, prized for their rich flavor and typically enjoyed raw, grilled, or in hot pot dishes. Another specialty is Miyako Yakisoba (宮古焼きそば), a unique variation of the traditional Japanese stir-fried noodle dish, featuring thick noodles and a savory sauce, reflecting the region’s hearty and diverse culinary heritage.

Tarafuku is a beloved ramen shop in Miyako City, Iwate Prefecture, renowned for its simple yet satisfying offering of a single menu item, chuka soba (Chinese-style ramen). Established in 1953, this shop has become a local institution, cherished for its comforting flavors and generous portions. The chuka soba features a clear broth made from a blend of chicken and niboshi (dried sardines), delivering a light yet flavorful taste that’s both refreshing and satisfying. The distinctively flat, thin, and slightly curly noodles absorb the broth well, and the dish is topped with classic ingredients: a slice of pork chashu, menma (bamboo shoots), nori (seaweed), and green onions. The shop’s warm and nostalgic atmosphere, with simple decor and communal seating, attracts both locals and visitors eager to enjoy this iconic ramen. Despite its limited menu, Tarafuku is always bustling, leaving diners thoroughly satisfied with its generous portions and quintessential taste of Miyako’s culinary tradition.

Mennikanabo offers a delightful dining experience with a focus on fresh seafood and expertly prepared dishes. On a recent visit, I opted for an omakase course that included grilled dishes. The meal began with a selection of sashimi featuring three types of tuna and various white fish, all impressively fresh with a satisfying thickness and texture. The grilled dish of the evening was trout with a cheese and breadcrumb crust, which provided a lovely aromatic contrast. For the fried dish, I enjoyed a tempura of anago (conger eel) and small shrimp, where the eel was wonderfully fluffy and the shrimp exuded a rich aroma. The meal was rounded off with six pieces of sushi, including a standout serving of uni (sea urchin). I also added a side of abalone salted in its own liver, which paired excellently with sake. The friendly proprietress and attentive staff contributed to a warm and enjoyable dining experience. I look forward to returning for another visit.

Mennikanabo in Miyako is a standout ramen spot, particularly known for its rich duck-based dishes. The Kamo Paitan Ramen features a flavorful, thick broth that pairs well with the tender duck chashu, crunchy menma, and fresh spinach. The noodles have a slightly floury texture but complement the robust broth nicely. While the bold duck flavor is a highlight, it might be too rich for some palates. The restaurant offers a unique ramen experience, especially for those who enjoy hearty, intense flavors.
